Kolkata, Sep 14 (PTI) Jadavpur University will confer its newly instituted “Distinguished Alumni – JU” awards on 10 former students for their contributions to various fields later this year, Vice Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharya said Monday.
The VC, however, did not share the names of those 10 who will get the award during the convocation on December 24.
“Alumni are an integral part of the university’s extended family. Their achievements enhance the reputation of the institution, while their experience, expertise and resources can also contribute significantly to the academic and institutional development of Jadavpur University,” Bhattacharya said in a statement.
The decision to honour former students for their contributions across five fields of national and global importance was taken at the university’s Executive Council meeting in April.
The five fields are Academia and Research, Corporate Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Public Life and Philanthropy, and Arts, Literature and Creative Expression.
Bhattacharya said the university looks forward to greater engagement with its alumni in areas such as mentoring students, promoting research and innovation, facilitating industry-academia linkages and supporting various institutional initiatives.
Nominations were received from alumni and regular faculty members of the university and were evaluated by an independent jury comprising eminent persons from different fields, the vice chancellor said.
Following the evaluation, 10 alumni from diverse fields have been selected for the inaugural conferment, he said in the statement.
Bhattacharya also acknowledged the contributions of all nominees who could not be selected this year.
“The accomplishments of our alumni are a matter of immense pride for Jadavpur University. We hope this initiative will further strengthen the bond between the university and its alumni and encourage them to contribute to the institution in diverse ways,” he said. PTI SUS NN
