Noida, Aug 14 (PTI) One man died and another was injured in a fire at a wood-cutting shop in Shahberi in Greater Noida West, police said on Friday.

The fire broke out at the shop, measuring around 12 by 10 feet, on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday, Chief Fire Officer Pradeep Kumar said.

Two people, Altamas and Aman, were sleeping inside when the fire broke out, the police said.

A fire service team and local police reached the spot and the electricity supply was shut off before the rescue operation was mounted.

The two men were brought out from the shop in an unconscious condition and taken to a local hospital, the police said.

Doctors declared Altamas dead during treatment, while Aman was referred to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital for advanced medical care. He is now stable, the police said.

Kumar said both men were asphyxiated by smoke rather than receiving burns.

Seven fire tenders were dispatched to the spot, but the fire was brought under control using a single vehicle, Kumar said.

The fire has been completely extinguished. PTI COR KIS VN VN

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
