Former Karnataka MP Prajwal Revanna convicted in rape case

Janata Dal (secular) leader and former Member of Lok Sabha Prajwal Revanna was convicted in one of the four sexual abuse and rape cases registered against him, by a Special Court of Sessions. The judge will announce the punishment on Saturday.

EC announces Vice Presidential election on 9 September

The Election Commission Friday announced election for the post of 15th Vice President following former VP Jagdeep Dhankar’s exit. The Commission stated, “If required, polling will be conducted on 9 Sept between 10 am and 5 pm. Counting of votes, if necessary, will be held the same day.”

Anil Ambani summoned by ED

Anil Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance group, has been summoned by Directorate of Enforcement (ED), amid an ongoing Rs. 14000 crore loan fraud investigation. The summons come following ED raids on multiple companies and executives of his group last week.

Goa assembly clears Land bill

Goa assembly has cleared the Goa Land Revenue Code (Amendment) Bill 2025, which is supposed to regularize unauthorized houses built on government owned land before February 2014. The bill was moved Thursday by state revenue minister Atanasio Monserrate, aiming to add a new section in the land revenue code to regularize encroachments and give ownership rights to eligible applicants. The opposition argued that the Bill would benefit non-Goans.

Lok Sabha to move bills including ST reservation in Goa Assembly

The Lok Sabha Friday will start proceedings to move the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill, 2024, for further consideration.

Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister, will also move the Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024 to align existing law with international maritime treaties.

UPI rules to change from 1 August

New UPI rules will begin starting Friday, implemented by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Users will not be able to check bank balance on PhonePe and other payment apps for an unlimited number of times. The NPCI put a limit of 50 to decrease the pressure on the API system during peak hours. Instead, users will be able to see their account balance after each UPI transaction.

Indian state refiners pause Russian oil purchases

State refiners in India have stopped purchasing Russian oil. India is the world’s third largest oil importer and largest importer of Russian crude. Sources from Indian Oil Corp, Hindustan Petroleum Corp, Bharat Petroleum Corp, Mangalore Refinery Petrochemical Ltd are quoted in a Reuters report saying the four refiners have not purchased Russian crude the past week.

Maharashtra Minister removed from Agri Ministry post rummy row

Maharashtra minister and Nationalist Congress Party MLA Manikrao Kotake was shifted Thursday late night from the Agriculture Ministry to Sports and Youth Welfare Department, following the controversy over a video of him playing online rummy game on his mobile phone while sitting in the legislative council. Dattarey Bharne, the current sports minister will be the new Agriculture Minister.

Militants arrested in Manipur

Security forces in Manipur arrested 4 militants, including Moirangthem Biramani Meitei, the self-styled army chief of the banned Kangleipak Commnuist Party (Nongdrenkhomba). He was arrested Thursday from Phubala Patton, Bishnupur district.

Rahul Gandhi claims 100% proof of EC doing ‘vote chori’ for BJP

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi alleged Friday that the Election Commission is doing “vote chori” for the ruling party, and that Congress has ‘open and shut’ evidence. He called the ‘evidence’ collected by his party on ‘poll irregularities’ an ‘atom bomb’.  ‘As soon as we release it [proof] the whole country would know that EC is indulging in ‘vote chori’ for the BJP,’ he said.
