New Delhi: The winter session of the Parliament began Monday on a stormy note.
Soon after the session convened, the bill to repeal the three contentious agricultural laws against which farmers have been protesting for over a year was passed without any discussion.
In Lok Sabha, the opposition came to the well of the House demanding a debate on the bill and raised slogans. Speaker Om Birla said he was ready to allow discussion on the bill if the protesting MPs go back to their seats. The shouting and sloganeering by the opposition did not help.
As the turmoil continued, the Speaker took a voice vote and declared the bill passed.
Addressing the media during the day ahead of the winter session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the government is ready to discuss all issues and answer all questions but the dignity of Parliament and the Chair should be maintained.
The first day of the winter session also saw protests by Congress leaders over farm laws issue. Led by party MP Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, the party staged a protest in Parliament complex, demanding a discussion on farm laws and making MSP a legal right.
