New Delhi: Speaking at the launch of the Central Vigilance Commission’s (CVC) Complaint Management System portal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned that the culture of glorifying the guilty in spite of them being jailed is not good for Indian society.

The CVC is an autonomous body created to address governmental corruption.

The launch is part of the CVC’s Vigilance Awareness Week which began Monday and will run till 6 November. The theme this year is ‘corruption-free India for a developed nation’.

In an apparent dig at the Opposition, Modi Thursday said “corrupt people are glorified” despite being proven guilty.

“Even today, some people give arguments in favour of the corrupt who have been found guilty. It is very necessary for such people, such forces to be made aware of their duty by society. In this, concrete action taken by your department has a big role. There is no need for institutions, which work against corruption and the corrupt, to be defensive in any way,” PM Modi said, giving a free hand to those that act against corruption.

Stating that the institutions need not work with a political agenda, he said it’s the government’s job to free the common man from the problems they are facing.

“Those who have vested interests will protest. They will attempt to strangle the institutions. Attempts will be made to defame those associated with these institutions. I have been in this system for a long time and have heard numerous abuses and allegations. There’s nothing else left that one can say to me. But people know the truth and when the time comes, they even stand with the truth,” he said.

The CVC also conducted a nationwide essay competition on the theme for students, Modi awarded the five winners at the event.
