New Delhi: After providing food for thousands during the pandemic, the Bangla Sahib Gurdwara in Delhi has now opened a pharmacy in its premises to sell medicines at subsidised rates.

Inaugurated on 29 August, the pharmacy is called ‘Bala Pritam Dawakhana’ and is run by trained pharmacists. It remains open from 10 am to 8 pm, Monday to Saturday. Hundreds have been visiting the pharmacy every day and a crowd can be seen gathered outside the shop even before it opens.

Medicines for diabetes, neurological illnesses, heart diseases and so on are available in the pharmacy. The gurdwara also arranges for any particular medicine that a patient needs.

Pharmacist Amarjit Kaur, who manages the shop, told ThePrint, “We do not believe in competing with other chemist shops. We just want to provide medicines at affordable prices so that people do not have to suffer because of their unavailability.”

The discounts on the medicines vary, but a maximum rebate of 70 per cent is given on particular drugs. In the days since its opening, the shop has witnessed a sale of more than Rs 1 lakh each day.

ThePrint’s photojournalist Manisha Mondal visited the shop at Bangla Sahib Gurdwara to see how business was going.
