Rahul Gandhi’s comments from his Dubai speech have been selectively trimmed from the actual video in the viral 10-second clip.

New Delhi: A short video clip from Rahul Gandhi’s speech in Dubai last week is being widely shared on social media where the Congress president can be heard saying that Mahatma Gandhi picked up the idea of non-violence from Islam.

According to the viral 10-second clip, selectively trimmed from the actual video, the Congress president said, “Mahatma Gandhi picked up the idea of non-violence from ancient Indian philosophy, from Islam.”

The video was shared by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia Sunday.

The translation of the text shared by Bhatia in Hindi said, “This is the real face of this political Hindu. Preaching non-violence in Dubai. Hindu religion is considered to be the most tolerant religion in the world but he doesn’t even take its name, just because the population of Hindus is low there. He uses terms for his convenience.”

Bhatia’s tweet received over 880 retweets and was viewed by more than 3,594 users.

Verified accounts of controversial author Tarek Fatah and social influencer Sonam Mahajan too shared the same clip but with different text.

The video shared by Fatah received over 4,390 retweets and was viewed more than 130,000 times.

The clip was also shared by thousands of users on Facebook.

Infamous for purveying fake news, Shankh Naad and Nation with Namo also shared the clip with the same claim. Just from these two pages, the video was shared by over 5,000 users.

What Rahul Gandhi actually said

The full video of Rahul Gandhi’s speech to Indian workers in Dubai, available on the official YouTube page of the Indian National Congress, reveals the party president had said that Gandhi picked up the idea of non-violence from various religions, including Islam.

At around 24 minutes and 11 seconds in the video, Rahul Gandhi can be seen talking about the non-violence part in his speech.

“Non-violence is embedded inside our DNA and it has been embedded not for fifty years. Mahatma Gandhi was a great exponent of non-violence. But Mahatma Gandhiji picked up the idea of non-violence from our great religions, from our great teachers,” he said. “Mahatma Gandhi picked up the idea of non-violence from ancient Indian philosophy, from Islam, from Christianity, from Judaism, from every great religion where it is clearly written that violence will not help anyone achieve anything.”

As Rahul Gandhi mentioned the “great religions” of the world for inspiration to Mahatma, he named three but omitted the Hindu religion.

While the BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia and Right-leaning influencers shared the trimmed clip, another BJP spokesperson Malavika Avinash shared a bigger part of the video.

However, she criticised Rahul Gandhi for not including Hindu religion in his speech.
