New Delhi: An image of a hijab-clad girl sitting on the chair of a senior officer of the Maharashtra Police, surrounded by Maharashtra Police officers, has gone viral on social media.

Many of those sharing the photograph claim that she has become the first Muslim Superintendent of Police in Maharashtra after studying in an Urdu medium education system, and has ignored the police dress code on her very first day.

Some social media users have questioned how this was allowed, while others have used this post to attack the Shiv Sena, which is part of the ruling government in Maharashtra. The Sena’s chief Uddhav Thackeray is the chief minister.

“Muslim SP in Maharashtra becomes first IPS through Urdu medium! Who on the very first day left his police dress code and adopted an Islamic dress code !! Congratulations to the Shiv Sena Government !! The contribution of Shiv Sena in Ghazwa-e-Hind will also be appreciated,” one post reads.

A tweet on the issue by Twitter handle ‘Veere Vishal’, garnered over 1,000 retweets.

On Facebook too, the photo has gone viral. A page belonging to Shandilya Gaurav Chaudhary, which has 327,077 followers, shared the image. Chaudhary’s page says that he belongs to the Hindu Yuva Vahini, Haryana, and is a politician.

Fact check

The picture of the hijab-clad girl sitting in a senior police officer’s room is actually from March this year, ahead of International Women’s Day. The Buldhana district administration had implemented an initiative to give young girls in government schools the chance to play collector and superintendent of police for a day.

The initiative was conceptualised by Buldhana Collector Suman Chandra to allow the young girls to experience the functioning of the police administration. The girl in the image is 14-year-old Sahrish Kanwal from Zilla Parishad Urdu High School, Malkapur tehsil, who was made the superintendent of police for a day.
