New Delhi: From wars on vaccine nationalism and diplomacy to deadlier strains increasing fears of fresh waves across countries, the coronavirus pandemic continues to wreak havoc across the world. The latest count of cases across the globe stood at more than 11 crore and more than 24 lakh deaths.

In some interesting Covid-related developments around the world, China has called out the stockpiling of Covid vaccines by rich countries while some Zimbabweans are putting their faith in a shrub to treat the deadly disease.

China says vaccine stockpiling causing ‘immunity divide’

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has accused developed countries of stockpiling coronavirus vaccines and has called for an end to the politicisation of vaccines, reports South China Morning Post.

Addressing a United Nations Security Council briefing, Yi said cooperation on vaccine distribution should be a “zero-sum” game and that China had no geopolitical intentions in giving out vaccines.

“The vaccines are entering high-income nations rapidly and in large quantity, leaving only a few to the poor nations. This has led to an ‘immunity divide’ and intensifies the development gap between rich and poor countries,” Yi reportedly said.

China has reported 89,806 coronavirus cases and 4,636 deaths so far.

Snowstorms in the US disrupt vaccine drive

Unprecedented snowstorms across the United States have jeopardised its vaccine drive as confusion and cancellations loom large over the drive, reports The Guardian.

Even in deep south states such as Alabama and Georgia, weather conditions have led to either closing down of vaccine centres or delay in necessary shipment.

The US Center for Disease Control has said dangerous road conditions and power outages will cause further delays. New York had to hold off 30-35,000 vaccine appointments because of a delay in the delivery of its vaccine shipment.

The US has reported 2,84,53,526 coronavirus cases and 5,02,544 deaths so far.

Zimbabwe puts faith in shrub ‘Zumbani’ to beat Covid

Zimbabweans are hopeful that they can beat Covid-19 with the help of ‘wonder’ shrub ‘Zumbani’, reports The Daily Sabah.

Scientifically known as Lippia javanica, Zumbani is a woody, erect shrub found in Zimbabwe and other African countries.

Zimbabwean couple Nyson Mhaka, 52, Gertrude, 47 claims they recovered from Covid-19 after taking this herb and have been promoting its benefits ever since.

While no scientific studies have been conducted to prove Zumbani’s healing properties in Covid-19 patients, some say its respiratory healing properties may have provided limited help in certain cases.

Zimbabwe has reported 35,423 coronavirus cases and 1,418 deaths so far.

Canada fears third Covid-19 wave

Fears of a third Covid-19 wave are gripping Canada as variants of the virus have spread in even remote regions of the country, reports CTV News.

Though the case count has dropped in the country and vaccinations are on the rise, the spread of deadlier strains of Covid-19 are sparking fears as experts are concerned that vaccinations won’t be able to outpace the spread of the virus.

Officials have also recorded at least 500 cases of the deadlier mutations, which many believe is an underestimated figure.

Further, experts fear that Canada’s biggest province is moving too quickly in paring down health protocols. In Ontario, Premier Doug Ford called the gradual loosening of restrictions in some parts of the province this week a “transition” instead of a “reopening.”

Canada has reported 8,34,182 coronavirus cases and 21,435 deaths so far.
