Kerala & Maharashtra report highest daily Covid deaths, active cases lowest since 13 June

New Delhi: Kerala and Maharashtra were the only two states that reported deaths in double digits Wednesday. Since the last five days, daily deaths have remained below 100 in India.

Meanwhile, active cases in the country fell to the lowest since 13 June 2020, when total cases in India were 3,08,000.

Over the last 24 hours, 11,067 new cases of Covid-19 infections were reported in the country, with nearly 70 per cent of the new cases reported from Kerala and Maharashtra.

Active cases in India continue to decline, falling to 1,41,511 Wednesday. This is the lowest since 13 June last year.

India’s Covid-19 death toll now stands at 1,55,252, with 94 deaths reported in the last 24 hours. Maharashtra and Kerala reported the highest number of daily deaths among the states.

Punjab’s case fatality rate (CFR) remains the highest in the country at 3.23. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s CFR is the second highest at 2.50 and Sikkim’s fatality rate has increased to 2.20. The overall fatality rate for India has reduced to 1.43.

In the last 24 hours, 7,36,903 Covid-19 tests were carried out across 1,214 government laboratories and 1,159 private laboratories.

A total of 20,33,24,655 Covid-19 tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Positivity rate

The daily test positivity rate for India in the last 24 hours was 1.5 per cent. The overall positivity rate, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is 5.3 per cent.

In the last 24 hours, 13,087 Covid-19 patients were discharged from across India. This brought the total number of Covid-19 recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,05,61,608.

A total of 65,28,210 healthcare workers have been vaccinated in the country so far, with 2,69,202 beneficiaries vaccinated in the last 24 hours.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 1,08,58,371 people in India have been infected with Covid-19. The largest number of cases so far were reported from Maharashtra, followed by Karnataka and Kerala.

States with the highest active cases

Active cases in Kerala declined to 64,390 Wednesday, with 5,214 new Covid-19 cases reported from the state in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of Covid-19 cases in the state to 9,77,394.

A total of 3,902 people have died due to Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic in the state, with 19 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Maharashtra’s active case count declined to 35,917 Wednesday. As many as 2,515 new cases of Covid-19 were reported from the state in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of cases detected from the state to 20,48,802.

As many as 51,360 people have died due to Covid-19 in the state, with 35 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Karnataka reported 366 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total infections detected in the state to 9,43,212. Of these, 5,804 cases are currently active, while 12,241 people have died. Two Covid 19 deaths were reported in the state since Tuesday.

West Bengal’s active case count fell to 4,496 Wednesday. With 146 new Covid-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours, the total number of infections detected from the state reached 5,71,636.

A total of 10,215 people in the state have lost their lives to Covid-19, with six deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Tamil Nadu is now the state with the fifth highest number of active cases. As of Wednesday, the state’s active cases fell to 4,328, with 469 new cases of Covid-19 detected since Tuesday. This brings the total number of cases in the state so far to 8,42,730. Of these, 12,391 people have died, with four deaths reported in the last 24 hours.
