India’s daily tests dip below 10 lakh, Kerala sees spike in total active caseload

New Delhi: The number of Covid-19 tests conducted across the country, in the last 24 hours, reduced to less than 10 lakh Thursday, leading to a slight increase in the test positivity rate.

While active cases continue to decline in the country, Kerala is seeing an increase in its active case numbers, which is already the second-highest in the country.

As many as 31,521 people tested positive for Covid-19 across the country in the last 24 hours.

Active cases in the country declined to 3,72,293 Thursday. This accounts for 3.81 per cent of the total cases detected in India since the beginning of the pandemic.

The number of Covid deaths reported across the country over the last 24 hours increased to 412. This has brought the total death toll in India to 1,41,772.

Punjab’s case fatality rate continues to be at 3.15 — the highest in the country. Maharashtra and Sikkim also have high CFR of 2.56 and 2.23, respectively. However, Sikkim has not reported any new deaths since 2 December.

Kerala has a low CFR of 0.38, despite having a high number of cases. India’s overall case fatality rate is now 1.45.

The number of Covid-19 tests conducted across 1,190 government laboratories and 1036 private laboratories in the country, in the last 24 hours, reduced to 9,22,959. For the past week, India has been carrying out over 10-lakh daily tests.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 15,07,59,726 Covid-19 tests have been carried out.

Positivity rate

A dip in the number of tests led to a slight increase in the test positivity rate to 3.4 per cent. The overall TPR for India, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is now 6.4 per cent.

As many as 37,725 Covid-19 patients were discharged across India in the last 24 hours. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 92,53,306 people in India have recovered from the Covid-19 pandemic.

So far, a total of 97,67,371 people have been infected with Covid-19 in India. It has the second-largest disease burden, in terms of total cases, in the world after the US.

States with highest active cases

In the last 24 hours, Maharashtra reported 4,981 new cases, bringing the total number of infections in the state to 18,64,348.

The number of active Covid cases in the state declined to 74,315. With 75 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s death toll now stands at 47,902.

In Kerala, 4,875 people tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, which has brought the total number of cases detected in the state to 6,49,571.

The state has the second-highest number of active cases, which increased to 60,066 in the last 24 hours.

As many as 35 Covid deaths were reported in the state over the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll of the state to 2,507.

West Bengal now has the third-highest active caseload in the country, with 23,650 active cases. In the last 24 hours, the state reported 2,956 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the state’s total to 5,10,951.

Of these, 8,867 people have died with 47 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Karnataka moved down to record the fourth-highest number of active Covid-19 cases, with the number decreasing to 23,075.

The state reported 1,279 new cases in the last 24 hours, which has brought the total number of cases detected in the state to 8,96,563 — the second-highest after Maharashtra.

With 20 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s total death toll is 11,900.

Uttar Pradesh recorded the fifth-highest number of active Covid cases Thursday. The state reported 20,658 active cases and 1,326 people have tested positive for the disease in the last 24 hours, bringing the state’s total to 5,59,499 cases.

With 20 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s death toll stands at 7,987.
