New Delhi: The Covid numbers in India are now adding up to almost a lakh every two days, with 84% active cases being reported from 10 states. Of the total over 4.85 lakh active cases, 54% cases are in the three states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, while Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat, Bihar, Telangana and Delhi account for 30% cases.
The doubling time is now 20 days. This, even as daily deaths have now settled at over 700. However, a massive increase in testing to over 5 lakh Sunday has finally managed to push the crucial positivity rate below the critical mark of 10%. India is now aiming to test a million samples a day.
Active cases
Over the weekend, India added close to 1 lakh cases. On Monday, 49,931 fresh cases were reported, taking the total number of active cases to 4,85,114.
Number of deaths
More than 700 Covid deaths are being reported every day for the last many days now. There were more than 1,450 deaths over the weekend. On Monday, 708 more deaths were reported. The total now stands at 32,771. The case fatality rate is progressively falling and currently it is 2.28%. India has one of the lowest fatality rates in the world, the government said in a statement.
Mortality rate
Gujarat remains constant at the bottom of the mortality pyramid, while there is a slight rejig at the top. Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu now have the lowest mortality, followed by Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Ladakh, which was on top earlier, is at number five now.
Daily tests
There has been a sharp spurt in testing in the last three days. Over the weekend, tests crossed 4 lakh per day and stood at 5,15,472 Monday. This is a break from the past when tests dipped on Sundays.
Positivity rate
The sharp rise in testing has finally pushed the positivity rate below 10%, which is good news, even though the country is now recording almost 50,000 cases a day.
Recovered cases
In the last 24 hours, as many as 31,991 patients were discharged. This has taken the total recoveries beyond 9 lakh, and the number currently stands at 9,17,567. The recovery rate is 64%.
Total cases
The total cases in the country currently stand at 14,35,453. The doubling time continues to be about 20 days, even though the base is now significantly high.
High-burden states
Maharashtra reported 7,975 cases and 233 deaths in the last 24 hours. The positivity rate remains almost 20% with a doubling time of 24 days.
Karnataka has now joined Maharashtra and Telangana at the top, with the three states together accounting for 54% cases in the country. The state reported 3,176 cases in the last 24 hours and has a doubling time of about 10 days.
Tamil Nadu reported 4,496 cases and 68 deaths in the last 24 hours. The state now has a doubling time of 23 days and a positivity rate of 8.74%.
Andhra Pradesh reported 2,432 cases and 44 deaths in the last 24 hours. The state has a positivity rate of 2.91% and a doubling time of 10.5 days.
Delhi reported 613 cases over the last 24 hours, taking the total to 1,31,219, including 3,853 deaths. The city is now being used as a model for Covid containment strategies.
Tests and positive cases
Delhi’s cases may have come down but so has testing. In the last 24 hours, only 11,506 tests were done. Tamil Nadu did 62,305 tests and Maharashtra 49,811 tests.
