Daily Covid-19 deaths below 300 this week, but India’s R value remains unchanged at 0.90

New Delhi: Even as active cases continued to decline, India’s R value remained at 0.90 this week, after having risen from 0.86 the week before.

The number of daily deaths remained below 300 throughout the week, while daily tests fluctuated between eight lakh and a little over 11 lakh.

India’s effective reproduction number (R) remained the same as last week, at 0.90. R needs to be sustained below 1 for an epidemic to come to an end.

On the New Year Day, the country reported 20,035 new cases of Covid-19, with majority of these cases reported from the top five states with the highest number of active cases.

The number of active Covid-19 cases fell to 2,54,254, as the number of recoveries continued to outnumber the new cases. This accounts for 2.47 per cent of the total number of cases reported from India so far.

In the last 24 hours, 256 Covid-19 patients died across the country. A total of 1,48,994 people have succumbed to the Covid-19 infection since the beginning of the pandemic, with nearly a third of the deaths reported from Maharashtra.

Punjab’s case fatality rate (CFR) remained at 3.20, the highest in the country. Meanwhile, Maharashtra, the state with the highest number of Covid-19 deaths, has the second highest CFR of 2.56.

Sikkim’s fatality rate is now 2.16. India’s overall case fatality rate is at 1.45.

As many as 10,62,420 Covid-19 tests were conducted across 1,200 government laboratories and 1,089 private laboratories in the last 24 hours.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 17,31,11,694 tests have been carried out in India.

The test positivity rate reduced slightly to 1.8 per cent Friday. Overall, test positivity, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is 5.9 per cent.

In the last 24 hours, 23,181 people recovered from Covid-19 across the country. Since the beginning of the pandemic 98,83,461 people have recovered from the infection. The recovery rate in India is now 96.08 per cent, one of the highest in the world.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 1,02,86,709 cases of Covid-19 have been reported in India. The largest number of cases so far have been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Kerala’s active case count fell to 65,381 Friday, with 5,215 people testing positive for the virus in the last 24 hours. This brought the total number of people infected in the state to 7,60,933 since the beginning of the pandemic.

In the last 24 hours, 30 people in the state have died, bringing the total Covid-19 death toll to 3,072.

Maharashtra’s active case count fell to 54,045 Friday, with 3,509 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours. With a total of 19,32,112 Covid-19 cases detected in the state since the beginning of the pandemic, Maharashtra has the highest number of cases in the country.

In the last 24 hours, 58 Covid deaths were reported in the state, bring the Covid-19 death toll in the state to 49,521.

In Uttar Pradesh, 936 new cases of Covid-19 were reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases from the state to 5,85,902.

The state’s active case count fell to 14,260. With 12 deaths in the last 24 hours, the total number of Covid-19 deaths in the state is now 8,364.

In West Bengal, 1,170 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours. The number of active cases in the state dropped to 11,985.

However, the Covid-19 death toll rose to 9,712, with 29 deaths reported in the last 24 hours. A total of 5,52,063 coronavirus cases have been reported from the state since the beginning of the pandemic.

In Chhattisgarh, active cases fell to 11,435 Friday. With 1,035 new cases of Covid-19 were reported in the last 24 hours, the total number of coronavirus cases detected in the state so far rose to 2,79,575.

The state has so far reported 3,371 Covid-19 deaths, of which 21 were reported in the last 24 hours.
