Covid testing ramped up to over 8 lakh for 1st time in a month, active cases drop to 1,46,907

New Delhi: The number of Covid-19 tests carried out in the last 24 hours increased to over 8 lakh, for the first time in a month. Despite this, the test positivity rate rose slightly to 1.7 per cent.

Active cases, meanwhile, declined for the second day in a row Wednesday. But Maharashtra, which is seeing a fresh surge in Covid-19 infections, is still reporting a rising trend in active cases.

As many as 13,742 people tested positive for Covid-19 across the country in the last 24 hours. Over 6,000 of these new cases were detected from Maharashtra.

Active cases in India fell for the second day in a row. On Wednesday, active Covid-19 cases in India dropped to 1,46,907.

Over the last 24 hours, India reported 104 Covid-19 deaths. This takes the country’s overall Covid-19 death toll to 1,56,567. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Delhi and West Bengal have recorded the highest number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

The overall fatality rate for India is 1.42. Punjab’s case fatality rate (CFR) is 3.22, the highest in the country. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s CFR, the second highest, is 2.45 and Sikkim’s fatality rate is 2.20.

Covid-19 tests in the country were ramped up in the last 24 hours, with 8,05,844 tests conducted across 1,220 government and 1,173 private laboratories.

Over 21 crore tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Despite increase in the number of Covid-19 tests, the daily test positivity rate for India increased to 1.7 per cent in the last 24 hours. The overall positivity rate, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, reduced to 5.1 per cent.

As many as 14,037 Covid-19 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of Covid-19 recoveries, since the beginning of the pandemic, to 1,07,26,702.

A total of 1,21,65,598 vaccine doses have been administered in India so far. These include 64,98,300 first doses to healthcare workers, 13,98,400 second doses to healthcare workers, and 42,68,898 first doses to frontline workers.

As many as 1,10,30,176 people in India have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. The largest number of cases reported so far are from Maharashtra, followed by Kerala and Karnataka.

States with the highest active cases

With 4,034 new infections of Covid-19 detected in Kerala in the last 24 hours, active cases in the state stood at 54,949 Wednesday. As many as 10,40,903 people in the state have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.

With 16 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll rose to 4,119 Wednesday.

Maharashtra saw 6,218 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, causing the state’s active cases to further increase to 54,604.

With 51 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll increased to 51,857 Wednesday. A total of 21,12,312 people have been infected with Covid-19 in the state so far.

Active cases in Karnataka increased to 6,081 Wednesday, with 383 new Covid-19 infections reported in the last 24 hours. This brings the total infections detected in the state to 9,48,849.

The state’s Covid death toll rose to 12,303, with four deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Tamil Nadu reported 442 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. Active cases in the state fell to 4,074 Wednesday.

A total of 8,49,166 people in the state have been infected with Covid-19, of which 12,472 people have died. Six of these deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.

West Bengal reported 189 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases detected from the state so far to 5,74,099.

Active cases in the state fell to 3,399. With two deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll rose to 10,253.
