Active Covid cases rise as Maharashtra records highest single-day spike since November

New Delhi: Active cases in India saw a sharp spike after Maharashtra recorded over 13,000 new cases of Covid-19 in a single day.

For the first time since November, active cases in Maharashtra crossed one lakh Thursday.

Since yesterday, 22,854 new cases of Covid-19 have been reported across the country — this is the highest single-day spike in cases since 23 December. Nearly 60 per cent of the new Covid cases were reported from Maharashtra alone.

After declining for two days, active cases in India once again rose to 1,89,226. The highest number of active cases is being reported by Maharashtra, followed by Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

In the last 24 hours, 126 Covid-19 deaths were reported from across the country. The overall Covid-19 death toll in India is now 1,58,063.

Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Delhi and West Bengal have recorded the highest number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

The overall fatality rate for India is now 1.40. Punjab’s case fatality reduced to 3.11 — which is still the highest in the country. Maharashtra’s CFR reduced to 2.33 while that of Sikkim is 2.18.

A total of 7,78,416 Covid-19 tests were conducted in 1,224 government laboratories and 1,186 private laboratories across the country.

A total of 22,42,58,293 tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Positivity rate

With increased number of cases, the test positivity increased to 2.9 per cent in the last 24 hours. The overall positivity, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is five per cent.

Recovered cases

In the last 24 hours, 18,100 Covid-19 patients were discharged across India, bringing the total number of recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,09,38,146.

A total of 2,56,85,011 vaccine doses have been administered in India so far, with 13,17,357 doses administered in the last 24 hours. Of these, 2,10,34,481 have received the first dose, while 46,50,530 have received the second dose of the vaccine.

Since the beginning of the pandemic 1,12,85,561 people in India have been infected with Covid-19. The largest number of cases so far have been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Kerala and Karnataka.

States with highest active cases

In the last 24 hours, Maharashtra reported 13,659 new cases of Covid-19. This is the first time since 8 October that the number of new cases in the state crossed 13,000. Active cases in the state increased to 1,00,240. The last time active cases in the state were over one lakh was on 6 November.

A total of 22,52,057 cases of Covid-19 have been reported from the state since the beginning of the pandemic. Of these, 52,610 people have died, with 54 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Active cases in Kerala fell to 35,715, with 2,475 new cases of Covid-19 reported from the state in the last 24 hours. This takes the total number of cases detected from the state to 10,83,530.

With 14 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll increased to 4,342.

In Punjab, active cases continue to increase. With 1,393 new cases of Covid-19 reported in the last 24 hours, active cases in the state rose to 9,402. A total of 1,92,040 people in the state have reported to be Covid-19 positive since the beginning of the pandemic.

With 17 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll increased to 5,978.

Karnataka reported 760 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. As a result, active cases in the state increased to 7,475. A total of 9,56,801 Covid-19 cases have been reported from the state since the beginning of the pandemic.

Of these, 12,379 people have died, with six deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

In Tamil Nadu, active cases increased to 4,207, with 671 new cases of Covid reported in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of cases detected from the state to 8,56,917.

The state reported five deaths in the last 24 hours, which takes the Covid-19 death toll to 12,530.
