Active Covid-19 cases decline in last 24 hours, over 85 lakh people vaccinated so far

New Delhi: Active Covid-19 cases in the country declined Tuesday, after three days of spike in infections. Maharashtra’s active case count, however, continued to increase, with over 3,000 new cases reported since Monday.

More than 85 lakh doses of vaccines have been administered across the country so far, with over 98,118 people having received the second dose.

In the last 24 hours, as many as 9,121 new cases of Covid-19 were recorded from across India. Kerala and Maharashtra accounted for over 68 per cent of the new Covid-19 cases in a single day.

After rising for three days, active Covid-19 cases in India declined to 1,36,872 Tuesday. Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal are the states with the highest number of active cases in the country.

India reported 81 Covid-19 deaths in the last 24 hours. This takes the country’s overall toll to 1,55,813. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Delhi and West Bengal have recorded the highest number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

Punjab’s case fatality rate (CFR) remains the highest in the country, at 3.23. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s CFR is the second highest, at 2.49 and Sikkim’s fatality rate is 2.20. The overall fatality rate for India has reduced to 1.43.

In the last 24 hours, the number of tests conducted across the country increased to 6,15,664. Over 20.7 crore tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Positivity rate

The daily test positivity rate for India reduced to 1.4 per cent in the last 24 hours. The overall positivity rate, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is now 5.2 per cent.

In the last 24 hours, 11,805 Covid-19 patients were discharged from across India, bringing the total number of recoveries, since the beginning of the pandemic, to 1,06,33,025.

A total of 85,16,771 healthcare and frontline workers have been vaccinated across the country since the vaccination drive began last month. These include 60,57,162 health care workers and 23,61,491 front line workers who have received the first dose, and 98,118 health care workers who have received the second dose.

While the countrywide immunisation drive was rolled out on 16 January, vaccination of  frontline workers started from 2 February.

A total of 1,09,25,710 people in India have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, with the largest number of cases reported from Maharashtra, followed by Kerala and Karnataka.

States with the highest active cases

Kerala reported a total of 61,550 active cases of Covid-19 Tuesday, with 2,884 new infections in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of Covid-19 cases in the state to 10,07,019, the second highest in the country after Maharashtra.

With 13 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the Covid-19 toll for Kerala now stands at 3,998.

Maharashtra saw an increase in its active case count to 37,383. In the last 24 hours, the state reported 3,365 new cases of Covid-19. This brings the total number of cases detected from the state so far to 20,67,643.

A total of 51,552 people have died due to coronavirus in Maharashtra, with 23 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Karnataka reported 368 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total infections detected in the state, since the beginning of the pandemic, to 9,45,638.

Active Covid-19 cases in the state now stand at 5,791. With two fatalities reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s death toll rose to 12,267 Tuesday.

Tamil Nadu saw a decline in active Covid-19 cases to 4,232. In the last 24 hours, 455 new cases of Covid-19 were detected in the state. A total of 8,45,575 people have so far been infected with Covid-19 in the state.

With six deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll rose to 12,425 Tuesday.

West Bengal reported 133 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases detected from the state so far to 5,72,728.

Active cases in the state fell to 3,960, while death toll rose to 10,233. One Covid-19 death was reported from the state in the last 24 hours.
