New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government Saturday said of the 14,378 Covid-19 cases in India, more than 4,000 are linked to the March congregation of Tablighi Jamaat in New Delhi.

“Nearly 29.8 per cent of the country’s total Covid-19 cases are linked to the Markaz (Nizamuddin Markaz) cluster incident. The attendees to the congregation have affected people in a total of 23 states and union territories,” Lav Aggarwal, joint secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said at a press briefing.

The government also said Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh were most affected due to the congregation.

Of the total cases in Tamil Nadu, 84 per cent are linked to the Tablighi Jamaat event, making it the most affected state. Telangana has 79 per cent cases linked to the Delhi congregation, followed by Delhi at 63 per cent, Andhra Pradesh (61 per cent) and Uttar Pradesh (59 per cent).

Relapse of cases in zero Covid-19 zones

The government also said there was a relapse of Covid-19 cases in Patna (Bihar), Nadia (West Bengal) and Panipat (Haryana), where instances of coronavirus were reduced to almost zero in the past 14 days.

On Thursday (16 April), the government had shared a list of 27 districts in 17 states where zero samples had tested positive for more than two weeks.

This list included Patna (Bihar), Nadia (West Bengal), Pauri Garhwal (Uttarakhand), Porbandar and Somnath (Gujarat), Pratapgarh (Rajasthan), Pilibhit (Uttar Pradesh) and West Imphal (Manipur), among other districts.

“Some of the positive cases have again come-up,” Aggarwal said, adding that the battle against coronavirus has to continue and it requires strict vigilance from all citizens.

‘Mortality rate high in people above 75 years’

India’s mortality rate due to Covid-19 is 3.3 per cent and three fourth of the deaths have been of people above 60 years, the government informed.

The mortality rate stood at 14.4 per cent in the age group of 0 to 45 years and 10.3 per cent in the 45-60 years bracket. It is 33.1 per cent in the 60-75 age bracket and 42.2 per cent in the above 75 years age group.

Combining the 60 to 75 and above age group, almost 75 per cent of the deaths have occurred in this particular bracket. “We have also noticed that 83 per cent of the total deaths were due to co-morbidities in patients,” Aggarwal added.

The country has so far registered 480 deaths.

  1. I request pls do not target a particular community. See all others states cases are rising rapidly there is no link of markaz there….even many county is affected. Virus came to India from China not markaz. Pls see the records 9th to 19th March, 8 more gathering bigger the markaz happened. They also need to be trace and tested Immediately. This is time to stay United and fight against covid.

    • Who said targetting any religion. If someone done any mistake, it must come to public domains… What govt said is right…

  2. 100% of cases in the world are because of one individual.
That individual is called “patient zero” in epidemiology.
Point being it is pointless to publish such data now. It only helps to foment disharmony and distrust.

  3. No data issued by this government in this regard can be relied upon. Modi-Shah’s intolerance or plain hatred for the Muslims is well known since Gujarat 2002. A give away in the present case was the enthusiasm with which the BJP – bhakt media started blaming Jammat from day one. Narendra Modi lied in his TV speech that screening of in-coming foreigners had started from such and such date. How were the Jammat foreign attendees allowed to come in if they were screened at entry and were indeed found to be Corona infected? Or, if they were found positive and still let in, then was it Modi-Shah government’s deliberate policy to let them spread the infection so the entire Jammat and all Muslims could be portrayed as villains? If they had entered without Corona and got infected at the Markaz, THEN WHY IS NOT ENTIRE NIZAMUDDIN AREA INFECTED WITH CORONA?
Modi-Shah are playing a very dangerous game, seemingly intent to let the anti-Muslim build up into a frenzy and lead to some kind of a civil war. Strictly in the name of humanity, I was very pleased to see the UAE princess making some statement yesterday. INDIAN MUSLIMS ARE PRESENTLY FEELING ORPHANED. It will be very much along the ancient Hindu sentiment of “Vasudhaiv-Kutumbakam” if some other foreign dignitaries raise a concern about Indian Muslims. No individual is greater than our beloved motherland, India. I personally cared two hoots for those who said “Indira is India” at one time, and I care two hoots for those who say “Modi is India” today. Jai Hind. Long live our Secular, Democratic Republic.

  4. So the narrative is set to escape future blame. As usual. Shift responsibility.
Blatant attempt at communalising. Do punish the guilty but hold those who are at the helm and gave permission and allowed this accountable and charge them howsoever mighty they are.

  5. Who is responsible for this?
The organisers,Delhi Govt.,Immigration office for (lack) of screening at airport of foreign participants, or DELHI POLICE for not preventing the gathering .
Mumbai police did prevent similar gathering in Mumbai.
Now that Central Government has quantified the impact, hope that they will take equitable action against everyone.

  6. Not surprised by the Government’s statement. Ho is responsible for the spread of Covid 19 in United States and Europe and now in African continent including the Arab nations. A scapegoat chosen by the ultra rightist Govt. to further alienate the minorities from mainstream. To convince this in masses the Television Channels are doing rest of the job with prime time coverage and regular honking of the same stories. A mere propaganda to demonize the muslims and consolidate more states in coming elections. Instead the middle class, workers or labor class with others amounting to 40% unemployment is kept busy with the denial of any relief from the lockdown and few are revolting for not getting it. The TV anchors are doing a perfect job to divert the story of sufferings of these 40% masses and instead covers the menace of Hindu Muslim. The colonel era style of Divide and Rule hence is worked perfectly with no opposition in counter it.
