CBSE plans to make it easier for class 10 students to pass board exams

At present it’s mandatory to secure 33% in class 10 board exam and 33% in internal assessment but CBSE wants to change that.

New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Examination (CBSE) may soon make it easier for its class 10 students to pass their board exams.

Students appearing for the class 10 exams may soon be exempted from securing 33 per cent marks in theory (board exam) and the internal assessment separately, authoritative sources have told ThePrint.

CBSE is likely to take a call on the issue this week. If implemented, it would mean students have to just achieve a combined 33 per cent of marks to pass the exam.

The decision is expected to bring relief to lakhs of students.

The board had earlier this year relaxed the mandatory criteria of separate pass marks for class 10 students who appeared for the board exams, which had been stopped for several years.

In a circular issued to all CBSE-affiliated schools across the country, however, it said that the decision to implement an overall 33 per cent pass mark criteria was for this year’s batch of students only.

A senior Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry official told ThePrint that the relaxation could now be granted for the next year too.

“The relaxation was given as a one-time measure but we feel that there is a need to extend it for next year too,” the senior HRD official said. “Students will not be required to secure separate 33 per cent marks for theory and practicals. This will give them the much-needed relief. CBSE will take a final call on it”.

The class 10 exams were made mandatory from this year after seven years. In 2009, the HRD ministry had said the class 10 exams will be made optional and it implemented it in 2010-11.

Exams in February, March

From 2019, the board exams for vocational subjects in classes 10 and 12 will begin from the latter half of February 2019 and the exam for all the core subjects will be conducted in March 2019, the CBSE said.

HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar had also said that no major changes would be made to the exam process midway to ensure students are not affected.

CBSE has also said the decision to conduct board exams for vocational subjects was taken after the Delhi High Court order dated 11 July 2018, which had directed Delhi University to fix the cut-off dates for admission to undergraduate courses only after CBSE had declared its results, including that of re-evaluation. The board offers 40 vocational subjects in class 12 and 15 in class 10.

Overall, CBSE offers its students 240 subjects, of which only the language paper is compulsory for class 12 students and language, mathematics, science and social science is compulsory for class 10 students. Apart from the compulsory papers, students are allowed to select any combination of subjects.

“So far, exams began in March and went on till the end of April to accommodate all combination of subjects. Because of this, the results were pushed to the end of May,” said a CBSE official. “It delayed the result for re-evaluation as it was released in July thus putting students at a disadvantage when it came to undergraduate admission in Delhi University”.

  1. This is great news… Big relif for 2019 board students… Now students will not do suicide… Thanks cbse…. Please do not cancel this cretria again… Overall 33 percent is best… Thanks

  2. Dear sir/madame
I am a student from little woods school Andhra Pradesh through this comment box i would like to raise out my view on the problems being faced by every student in the schools

A lot of partiality is shown especially in CBSE schools

The teachers mainly madames select or support or love only one or two students per class .All the oppurtunities are given to that particular student . The teachers along with those students discourage the other students though they study hood the teacher show all thier anger or any other feelings on the students academics. The matter is that the students are targeted for tutions

Finally i could like to ask the CBSE board to help us to over come such insane acts taking place in high profile schools.

    Yours sincearely

    A WELL WISHER FOR STUDENTS????????
    ????‍????

  3. Dear CBSE please stop behaving like Indian politicians.Bring a maturity and stability on your decisions. You dont realise what up and down students and parents go through after your horrible decisions.Every year you come up with new rules .Are the students guinea pig of your laboratory to conduct experiment with their future.

  4. I am currently in class 10th right now. (2018-19). I think a question should be raised on the basis of legitimacy of the board. They are making mockery of the students. We have to give our final examination with full syllabus , but the batch immediate junior will be giver with reduced syllabus. The board should stick on to one curriculum. Last year the board had transition from CCE to board. That totally illegitimate!

  5. It will be a boon for weaker student and they will never get motivated to come up to their best of ability. They will face a tougher time when they will reach in under garaduation and post graduation level.

  6. What is this muddle headed CBSE up to? Every few weeks it comes out with new guidelines and notifications. What is its objective? To show how many students have cleared the exams without learning or understanding a thing?

  7. Utter Rubbish of a proposal. How much more will the govt. impinge on meritocracy ?
At this rate it appears that soon CBSE will give pass marks in board exams to students just for appearance on exam dates and writing their names in answer scripts.
Politicking with the future of students.

  8. Please stop these exams marks this is not the tool to guage some one IQ many children are ending their life because of the exams fear

  9. Aniket .u r wrong …same criteria for passing d subject was same …no seperate 33%were required…theory n internal assesment both together students hv to secure 33%..if i m not wrong

  10. 22 students from my class not able to score passing marks (27) in half yearly exam.
So , it will be somehow beneficial for them to pass in board exam if combined passing marks will be introduced.

  11. CBSE Ko internal or external join kurke hi passing kurna chahiye so much syllabus children have to learn on the other hand they removed cce pattern think how they will do .

  12. Board is making mockery of the students. Every year if we do like that then next year weak students will mentally prepare themselves that later on separate passing criteria will be exempted so why do we study? Means be stick on one format. Understood that last year we did the same thing because of transition from CCE to normal mode.

  13. Cbse ko mere batch se hi dushmani thi lagta hai???? I am currently in eleventh means Maine is saal diya tha board exam aur usne to inhone full syllabus + seprate passing kar di thi aur is saal phir hata di. That’s not fair
