New Delhi: Zohran Mamdani, the mayor of New York City, has issued an executive order humorously declaring a temporary repeal of bedtimes in honour of the upcoming NBA Finals. Some children were seated around the mayor’s desk as he signed the order.
“Today, I signed an Executive Order temporarily repealing bedtimes in the City of New York so that kids of all ages can watch our team in the NBA Finals. As Mayor, you’re forced to make many difficult decisions. This was not one of them. Go Knicks,” Mamdani wrote in the X post.
The order is symbolic and carries no legal effect, but it was intended as a celebration of the city’s excitement surrounding the Knicks’ Finals appearance.
It’s not the first time Mamdani has tweeted about the Knicks.
On 22 May, Mamdani posted a photo of himself at a Knicks game. “Knicks Forever,” read the caption.
After the Knicks swept the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals on 25 May, Mamdani went viral on X.
“@NYCSanitation I’d like to report a sweep,“ read his post.
‘Mamdani don’t know ball’
The NYC mayor’s recent stunt generated a mix of amusement and support online.
“Very clever. He promotes the Knicks, and it will get kids talking about basketball,” read a comment.
Another loved the tweet. “Agree or disagree with the man, that move is pretty epic,” wrote Chris Lupton.
Not everyone was having fun.
“That’s cute. Now let’s see if he signs an executive order banning businesses from leaving New York because he’s taxing them at 90% or an executive order that buoys up, via government subsidy, all the small-mid size businesses he’s currently destroying,” wrote an X user named Uncle Jack. “Mamdani don’t know ball.”
It’s the first year the Knicks have reached the NBA Finals since 1999. The team hasn’t won an NBA championship since 1973.
The NBA 2026 finals are set to be held from 3 June to 19 June in San Antonio and New York.
