New Delhi: Fashion influencer Sufi Motiwala, known for his blunt outfit reviews and sarcastic delivery on Instagram, is now at the receiving end of the same roast culture he helped popularise online.
Motiwala’s celebrity and influencer fashion critiques routinely go viral.
”Log apne diwali wali outfit pehen k chale gaye hai,” he said about influencers at Coachella.
He also criticised influencer Manav Chhabra’s Coachella outfits, calling it “embarrassing” and cheap.
Motiwala has often repeated his critiques were about the outfits and not the individuals. But his signature style has come back to bite him.
Motiwala stepped on the Cannes carpet in an ensemble he would’ve roasted anyone else for wearing. Instagram took the cue and ran with it.
“The rings are giving Sarojini couture,” said Ankit Singh, a NIFT student, in Motiwala’s signature cadence. The reel has over 95,000 views.
Motiwala was wearing a deep wine shirt and wide-legged pants with a shimmery blazer made from “resham remnants generated through everyday karigari”. The shirt’s collar was embroidered with paisley motifs in silver. The same embroidery was used to create a faux tie on the shirt. He paired the look with multiple gemstone rings, tinted glasses, and sleek side-parted hair.
The comments on Motiwala’s own post reflected the culture of critique he built. “Its giving Shadi mei band baja wala couture!”, “Who will wear like this is in cannes honey and jewelry is not matching and the tie to too tacky and the hair is makeup it’s giving trauma 2 out 10 buyeeeee”, “It’s giving MADAN LAL DRESS WALA and SAJNI BEAUTY PARLOUR did a collab………0 out of 10”

Roasting the roaster
Content creator Shivam Trivedi, who routinely does roasts, wasn’t going to miss out on this opportunity.
In a reel captioned, Roasting Sufi Motiwala’s Cannes Outfit…..in his own style, Trivedi said “The chasma (glasses) is giving dadi amma vibes, so is the hair”. The reel has over 4 million views.
Commenters on the reel range from Benny Dayal’s “SHOTS BEEN FIRED!!!!” to Orry’s laughing emojis. No one feels bad for Motiwala, they’ve all been roasted by him before.
This was all for Motiwala’s second Cannes look. His first one—wide-legged white pants with draping details, paired with a high-neck boxy beige shirt—wasn’t spared either.
“I don’t know why you look like lal bahadur shastri, but with fashion,” said one commenter under Motiwala’s post.
Not everyone was negative. “So proud of you Sufi!!! I won’t have survived this without you” commented influencer Ishita Mangal, who also walked the red carpet at Cannes this year.
Ankit Singh roasted this look too, “Kya hain ye or kyu hain ye (what is this and why is this).
There’s one comment that stands out under this reel and that’s Motiwala’s. “RAILWAY CHADDAR IS INSANEEEEEEE HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH DECEASEDDDDD,” he wrote.
It shows the fashion commentator can take it as well as he dishes it. After all, the roasting has only pushed more engagement toward Motiwala’s content, with parody reels gaining thousands of views and shares within hours.
