New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia has directed that the university’s students’ union constitution be approved and implemented by 15 May 2027, while ordering the revocation of disciplinary action, suspensions and campus bans linked to the recent protests by students on the ongoing hunger strike.

“The approval and implementation of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union Constitution shall be completed by 15 May, 2027,” a notice issued by the Office of the Registrar said. “The elections shall be conducted within six weeks of the start of the academic session, that is approximately mid-July 2027.”

It directed that after the approval of the Constitution, the University shall release the notification for elections in accordance with the recommendations and guidelines of the Lyngdoh Committee.

The same directive revoked all ongoing show-cause notices, disciplinary actions, rustication, suspensions and campus bans issued in connection with the protest, and instructed the protesting students to call off their hunger strike and agitation with immediate effect.

The move comes on the 106th Foundation Day of the university, after nearly three weeks of sustained agitation. Students from the university had been protesting for 18 days, with two students — Ebin Basil and Rehan Khan — remaining on hunger strike, demanding the revival of an elected students’ union. A union has been absent in the university since 2006.

Rejection of an earlier directive

In a separate notice, the university announced that offline classes and offline examinations will resume from 2 November 2026.

All undergraduate and postgraduate programmes will shift back to offline mode according to the respective department and faculty timetables. Mid-semester, end-semester and other scheduled examinations will also be conducted only in offline mode. Regular attendance has been made mandatory, and deans, heads of departments, directors of centres and other authorities have been instructed to make the necessary arrangements for classrooms, seating, invigilation and related facilities. The university said it will not be responsible for any inconvenience arising from non-compliance with the order.

The latest order follows the rejection of an earlier directive issued on 26 October.

The previous order had linked the holding of elections to the approval of a new constitution but provided no deadline for the approval process itself. The administration had conditioned the polls on the approval of a new union constitution “with no deadline set for its approval.”

Further, it directed that the students “shall issue a public apology through press conference for any defamatory statements/actions/posts made during the protest against the university administration. All such posts shall be taken down from channels on social media with immediate effect.”

Students objected to the clause, arguing that the absence of a fixed timeline left the entire process open to indefinite delay and refused to accept the order as a resolution of their demands.
