New Delhi: A Chandigarh-based doctor is in the spotlight after a video showing her riding a motorcycle through the corridors of Fortis Hospital in Mohali, during the hospital’s silver jubilee, went viral.

The video starts with the doctor, identified as Dr Swapna Misra, a robotic gynaecological surgeon, wearing sunglasses and posing with the motorcycle. Seconds later, Misra is seen sitting on the pillion while a man drives the bike through the hospital corridor. As they pass through, she waves at people around them, with the Bollywood songtrack ‘Dhoom Machale’ playing in the background.

As the bike reaches the stage area, where the celebrations were taking place, the crowd erupts into cheers.

The video posted on 30 June has since gone viral, triggering criticism online and raising questions about professionalism inside the hospital.

Nitin Sharma, sports journalist for The Indian Express, also criticised the video online.

“Strange video uploaded on Facebook by Dr Swapna Mishra of Fortis Mohali’s 25th anniversary celebrations. How can somebody be allowed to ride a motorbike inside the hospital? Hope @PunjabPoliceInd @dcmohali takes action against such incidents,” Sharma posted on X.

Sharma’s post alone had garnered more than 77,000 views and around 40 reposts.

The original video, which was posted on the hospital’s X account, appears to have been removed. However, another video shared by Fortis Hospital on its Facebook page, capturing the Silver Jubilee celebrations, shows doctors dancing and also includes a brief glimpse of the motorcycle entry.

Several other users also criticised the video.

“It’s all good-Fortis Mohali only performs drama in the name of healthcare and mints money out of patients’ woes,” read one comment under the Facebook post.

Another user wrote, “Race track India mei roads se hospital corridor mei utar aaya hai (In India, the race track has moved from roads to hospital corridors). Congratulations.”

Some, however, rushed to the doctor’s defence.

“Dr Swapna Mishra is one of India’s biggest robotic surgeons, who has successfully performed more than a thousand robotic surgeries. She’s an icon in robotic surgery. This may not be the main area, and the hospital must have taken precautions,” read one comment.
