(Reuters) – A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Leyte in central Philippines on Friday, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said.

The quake was at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), GFZ said.

The Philippines’ seismology agency in a bulletin said damage and aftershocks from the offshore quake should be expected.

The archipelago nation is in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where volcanic activity and earthquakes are common.
