(Reuters) – More than 275,000 homes and businesses in Texas, Kentucky and other U.S. states were without power on Thursday as storms battered the region since the long Memorial Day holiday weekend, according to meteorologists and data from PowerOutage.us.
That is down from more than 400,000 customer outages on Wednesday evening.
Tornado-spawning thunderstorms that swept the Southern Plains and the Ozark Mountains killed at least 21 across four U.S. states over the holiday weekend.
Texas power company Oncor, a unit of California-based Sempra Energy, had the most outages with about 186,122 customers without power in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, according to PowerOutage.us.
Oncor said power restoration work continued and will be substantially complete by Friday evening if the weather permits.
“Harder hit areas are expected to be restored on Saturday,” it said on its website.
CenterPoint Energy said its crews continued to repair damage to its electrical system and restore service.
