New Delhi: Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy, a film reportedly inspired by the 1998 blackbuck poaching case involving Salman Khan, has landed in legal trouble after the actor’s legal team issued a notice to its makers.
The notice calls the film “defamatory, prejudicial and a gross violation of Salman Khan’s personality rights”. It also seeks the removal of promotional material and asks the makers to stop the film’s release, which is yet to be announced.
The poster of the film was released on May 29, announcing the trailer launch on June 20. The film is directed by Bharat S Shrinate and produced by Amit Jani, while the cast has not been announced yet.
The poster shows a man resembling Khan holding a rifle and wearing his iconic Firoza bracelet. The film has been shot in Sambhal, Moradabad, and other cities of Uttar Pradesh, and explores the feud between Salman Khan and gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.

The film will reportedly be based on the 1998 blackbuck poaching case, in which Salman Khan was accused of hunting two blackbucks, a protected species under the Wildlife Protection Act, during the shooting of Hum Saath Saath Hain in Kankani village near Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Members of the Bishnoi community, for whom blackbucks are sacred and who have a long tradition of wildlife conservation, filed a complaint against Khan and his co-stars Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Neelam Kothari, and Tabu.
Twenty years later, in April 2018, a Jodhpur trial court convicted Salman Khan and sentenced him to five years in prison in connection with the case, while the other accused were acquitted. Two days later, the Jodhpur Sessions Court granted him bail.
Amit Jani, the producer of the film who had earlier produced Udaipur Files, shared the legal notice sent by Salman Khan’s team.
“Salman has started threatening people associated with the movie Kala Hiran by sending them notices,” he said.

In an interview, he shared that the film is based on the struggle of the Bishnoi community, who did not even have money for lawyers while Khan’s legal team was arriving with helicopters.
“This film does not glorify or demean Salman Khan’s image and it is not Salman’s biopic,” he said.
