New Delhi, Oct 18 ( PTI) India’s former executive director at the International Monetary Fund, Krishnamurthy V Subramanian, on Sunday dismissed Pakistan’s claim of returning to global financial leadership as a “historic milestone”, clarifying that the chair of the IMF and World Bank Boards of Governors is purely ceremonial and rotates annually.

In a post on X, Subramanian said, “Claim: “Pakistan is heading back to the top table of global finance after 74 years!. Reality: Pakistan will chair the IMF-World Bank Annual Plenary in 2027. This chair is purely ceremonial & rotates annually: Paraguay this year, Cabo Verde in 2025. It’s protocol, not power”.

Pakistan was named the incoming chair of the Boards of Governors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WBG) for 2027, returning to the position for the first time since 1953, its ministry of economic affairs had said on Friday.

Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, who is also Pakistan’s governor to the World Bank, was formally announced as the incoming chair during the plenary session of the 2026 WBG-IMF Annual Meetings in Bangkok.

The ministry termed the development a “historic milestone”, saying the chairmanship would provide Islamabad an opportunity to contribute to global economic and development discussions and facilitate constructive dialogue among member countries.

The IMF-WBG annual meetings, being held from October 12 to 18, have brought together more than 15,000 participants from 191 countries.

Pakistan is engaged with the IMF under a USD 7 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and a USD 1.4 billion Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF).

Pakistan is borrowing under the EFF to address its balance-of-payments needs and support economic reforms, and the RSF provides longer-term financing to help the country address climate-related risks and strengthen its resilience.

The country is also expected to receive about USD 1.2 billion from the IMF, subject to approval by its Executive Board, after IMF staff and Pakistani authorities reached an agreement on the latest reviews of the two loan programmes. PTI BKS BAL

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
