Each year, 21 September is observed as the United Nations-sanctioned International Day of Peace, also known as World Peace Day.
This was first established in 1981, to be observed every third Tuesday of September, the opening day of the UN General Assembly. But in 2001, it happened to fall on the day of the 9/11 attacks. That year, it was decided to observe this day on a fixed date—21 September.
The theme for 2025 is “Act now for a peaceful world”, in light of the various ongoing wars, armed conflicts and the resulting humanitarian crises. As UN Secretary-General António Guterres put it in a note released by his office, “In a time of turbulence, tumult, and uncertainty, it is critical for everyone to take concrete action to mobilize for peace.”
