New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to meet with US President Donald Trump next week, ThePrint has learnt.
Sources in the know said that the dates are being worked out and nothing is finalised yet but added that the next week’s trip is being discussed.
The Indian prime minister will be in France on 10-11 February, following which he is likely to fly to Washington on invitation from the US President. He is likely to return on 14 February, it is learnt.
During his Washington DC trip, Modi will also meet with business leaders and the Indian community.
Modi, according to a Hindustan Times report from Washington, is traveling to the US and Trump will host a dinner for him on the 13 February.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had on Friday said that India and the United States are working towards an early visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US, to further deepen India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic partnership.
Asked about reports emerging from the US, MEA sources said that there is no confirmation of the same.
Both Trump and Modi had held a ‘productive’ telephonic conversation, the White House said in a statement on Tuesday last.
The two leaders on Monday had their first telephone call since the inauguration of Trump’s presidency on 20 January.
During the call, a visit by Modi to the White House was mooted. The US President is said to have told the Indian leader to ensure “fair” bilateral trade between the two countries. In 2023-24, India exported roughly $77 billion worth of goods to the US, while importing around $42.1 billion.
Trump also asked Modi to buy more American-made security equipment, the White House statement said.
Modi last visited the White House in June 2023 on an official state visit at the invitation of Joe Biden. In 2024, the Indian prime minister went to Wilmington, Delaware–Biden’s hometown–for the Quad Leaders’ Summit. He then spoke at the United Nations’ Summit of the Future in New York.
