New Delhi: In a remarkable display of bravery, Sepoy Navaneetha Krishnan D from Tamil Nadu, jumped into the fast-flowing Bhakra Canal and rescued a drowning woman after he stopped to check why a crowd had gathered on the road.

His brave act was caught on camera and shared on social media last week. It drew admiration from none other than the Army chief Gen Manoj Pande.

He was felicitated with the Chief of Army Staff commendation card by Gen Pande on 21st June 2023.

Army sources said that the incident is from 16th June 2023 when, while returning from Patiala to Sangrur during his ration collection duty, Sepoy Krishnan noticed a crowd gathered near the Bhakra Canal.

He was told that a woman was drowning. Hearing this, the Sepoy swiftly responded and sprinted 100 meters downstream towards the fast-flowing canal, where he discovered a woman struggling in the water.

Without hesitation, he leaped into the canal, successfully pulling her to safety. Utilizing his training as a Basic First Aid provider, he also performed Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to save her life, Army sources said.

Gen Pande expressed his appreciation, stating, “Sepoy Navaneetha Krishnan D has displayed extraordinary courage and presence of mind in saving the life of a woman. His act of bravery is an inspiration to all of us, and we take immense pride in having him among our ranks.”

Enrolled in the Army Medical Corps since 11th December 2018, Sepoy Krishnan is currently serving in a field Hospital in Patiala.

Described as physically fit, intelligent, courageous, diligent, and skilled in driving, Army sources said he continues to uphold the values of the armed forces through his exceptional service.
