New Delhi: Indian defence firm MKU, which manufactures electro-optics for soldiers and platforms, besides various kinds of armour, is setting up a manufacturing plant in Morocco.

MKU will be the second Indian defence firm to set up a plant in Morocco after TATA which manufactures the WhAp (Wheeled Armoured Platform) armoured vehicles there for the Moroccan military.

“MKU’s growing partnership with Morocco is entering a new chapter with an upcoming manufacturing facility in the SGZID Zone, marking an important step towards strengthening local capabilities in advanced electro-optics and personal protection solutions, including helmets, body armour and shields,” the company said.

The new manufacturing plant will not just cater to Moroccan forces needs but also that of Africa as a region.

MKU products are in service with over 230 forces across 100-plus countries. The company said that the Moroccan facility builds on a partnership that is already established.

Over the past five years, MKU has supplied optronics and personal protection products to the Moroccan armed forces. Local manufacturing marks the next phase of that engagement, bringing production closer to the end user.

The factory will produce solutions from MKU’s two core portfolios— a.) Netro optronics, which delivers multi-sensor electro-optic systems for situational awareness, surveillance, reconnaissance and target acquisition, and b.) Kavro Protection, which spans body armour, ballistic helmets, shields and platform armouring.

As per the plan, MKU will transfer advanced production capabilities and technical expertise to Morocco, and create skilled employment for Moroccan engineers, technicians and manufacturing professionals.

Morocco has spent the past decade positioning itself as the industrial gateway between Africa, Europe and the Middle East, and its defence sector is now following the same path.

With one of the largest defence budgets on the continent, a national strategy to localise defence manufacturing and a mature aerospace ecosystem, the Kingdom offers the policy support, industrial depth and connectivity that export-oriented manufacturing demands.

And hence, products made at MKU’s new facility will be offered to partner forces across Africa and Europe, establishing Morocco as the company’s base for exports to the continent.

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
