Dubai: TVS Motor Wednesday announced the launch of a new electric two-wheeler — TVS X — as it seeks to expand footprint in the growing electric vehicle (EV) market in the country. The company is branding the new two-wheeler model as a crossover between a scooter and a motorcycle.

Developed at a cost of Rs 250 crore, according to the company, the TVS X, is priced at Rs 2,49,990 (ex-showroom price Bengaluru) and is scheduled to hit Indian roads in November this year.

At a media roundtable on the sidelines of the launch, Sudarshan Venu, managing director, TVS Motor Company said TVS X is a global product and the company will export it to other countries from the next financial year onwards.

“We will be exporting TVS X to some of our existing export markets like Bangladesh and Nepal. We will also have plans to export this product to Latin America as well advanced economies like Europe,” Venu said.

According to TVS Motor, the company plans to produce about 30,000 TVS X units annually and has set up a capacity to produce 100 units of this vehicle daily.

“This launch marks a defining moment in TVS Motor’s journey of showcasing a made-in-India EV, the TVS X. It has been designed for global citizens, who are trendsetters and visionaries, with a passion for technology. It is set to inspire a shift towards premium yet sustainable and technologically advanced mobility solutions,” Venu said, adding that the company aims to transform the EV segment and reaffirm its commitment to a more sustainable and cleaner future.

He added that in the next year-year-and-a-half, consumers will have “the completion of a full portfolio of electric vehicles ranging from electric bicycles, iQube, three-wheelers”.

A two-wheeler for Indian trendsetters

The objective behind designing the TVS X, Venu said, was to make a vehicle that can show capabilities of TVS and also captivate the imagination of Gen Z and millennials in India and “Indians today are trendsetters for the world”.

Currently, 20 percent of the company’s scooter sales are from electric vehicles, and the company expects to double this in the “next two years”.

TVS X offers a range of 140 km per charge and can go from 0kmph to 40 kmph in 2.6 seconds, and a machine speed of 105 kmph, according to the company. The vehicle has been developed from the ground up at TVS Motor’s research and development facility in Bengaluru. It comes with a 10.2-inch thin film transistor (TFT) touchscreen, with an onboard navigation and infotainment system.
