India’s Work Permit Seekers Keep Making the Same Expensive Mistake. Here Is Why.

New Delhi: Every year, thousands of Indian families commit to an overseas work permit process they do not fully understand. Many of them lose money. Some lose years. And a significant number return home with neither the career nor the savings they set out to build.

The usual explanation points to fraudulent visa agents. And while fraud is real and widespread, immigration professionals working on the ground say the problem runs deeper — to a fundamental failure of information in a market that is growing faster than awareness can keep pace.

“The challenge we face every single day is not dishonesty — it is misinformation,” said Mr. Sahil Chuttani, expert career counselor of Pan India Operations at Madhav Immigration Pvt. Ltd., a government approved immigration consultancy that has worked with clients across India since 2013. “Candidates arrive having already decided where they want to go, based on what their neighbors heard, what they saw on social media, or what an agent told them six months ago. Changing that picture — giving them accurate, updated information — is often harder than the documentation itself.”

The market Mr. Sahil Chuttani describes is driven largely by aspiration concentrated on a handful of brand-name destinations. Canada, the UK, Australia — countries whose immigration pathways are competitive, expensive, and frequently misrepresented by unlicensed intermediaries — absorb the bulk of demand. Meanwhile, a wider range of countries with accessible, legally sound work permit frameworks and genuine employment demand receive far less attention.

This mismatch has real costs.

Immigration lawyers and consultants across India note a consistent pattern: candidates from middle class families in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities — many of them 10th or 12th pass, with no prior overseas experience — approach agencies seeking work permits for premium Western destinations. When the process fails, as it often does, the financial and emotional fallout falls entirely on families who made their decisions with incomplete information and misplaced trust.

“Nobody tells these candidates that there are European countries actively hiring people with their exact background right now — in hospitality, in construction, in services — through legal, verifiable processes,” Mr. Sahil Chuttani said. “They have only ever heard about Canada and the UK. And in that vacuum, anyone who offers them what they want — regardless of whether it is real — finds a willing audience.”

Madhav Immigration Pvt. Ltd., which serves clients across India and maintains on-ground presence in Mauritius, Singapore, Malta, and Cyprus, has directed a substantial part of its 2026 outreach toward awareness — specifically targeting first-generation overseas job seekers in states including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Kerala, and Uttarakhand, where overseas employment aspirations are high but reliable guidance infrastructure remains thin.

The core message, those involved say, is simple: the right country for a specific profile may not be the most famous one. And a work permit that fits — one matched to a candidate’s background, budget, and realistic career trajectory — consistently outperforms an aspirational one that collapses halfway through.

“The families we are most concerned about are those making once-in-a-decade decisions based on once-heard advice,” Mr. Sahil Chuttani said. “That gap between what they know and what they need to know — that is what we are trying to close.”
