Though well-intended, raised taxes on gold and silver won’t curtail imports. Given the gold craze, people may stock it, anticipating a further price rise. The most logical nudge that’ll cut consumption and bring revenues is to raise fuel prices and taxes. No loss of face for doing the right thing.

  1. Not Gowda – Gujral way, for sure. CM Vijay possesses political capital, his government is ( politically ) safe for five years. The one trillion a year populist schemes will weigh down the fisc. However, beyond that, Tamil Nadu is a successful economy, including manufacturing for exports. Honestly, feel much more hopeful about its economic future than Bengal and Bihar.
