Modi-Shah’s comments on Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik’s advancing age and health are in poor taste. The 77-year-old leader’s administrative and political acumen remains as sharp as ever. A statesman who’s set high standards of probity in public life deserves better than self-avowed friends. Mocking ageing politicians is bad politics too.

Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s acquittal in a 22-year-old murder case is largely the result of a sketchy probe by the CBI. Its avoidable lapses impeded the presentation of a watertight case in a heinous offence. It’s unfair to the victim’s family that boldly exposed this powerful man.

S&P upgrade of India’s outlook to positive is a timely bookend to Modi’s decade. The last upgrade was in 2014. Fiscal consolidation and capex push, praised by them, are direct outcomes of government policy. Risks bear mentioning too. The new government must get cracking on reducing debt, current account deficit.
