The announcement of Wg Cdr Abhinandan Varthaman’s release is welcome and indicates the beginning of de-escalation. Modi and Imran Khan governments have demonstrated a mature approach, considering it was their first attempt at such crisis-management. Now, for real confidence to build, Pakistani renunciation of terror groups must be verifiable.
Pakistan must send back Wg Cdr Abhinandan right away – sooner the better
Pakistan should return Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthman to India without delay. It cannot hold him for leverage of any sort. The national upsurge for the combat hero’s return and concern for his safety is good. He’ll be back safe soon. Pakistan must understand that sooner will be better for it.
Political parties must desist from using India-Pakistan conflict for electoral gains
Until the current conflict with Pakistan settles, India’s political parties must resolve not to make it a campaign issue. If the BJP keeps claiming credit and others attack it, it does two-way damage: Weakens national resolve, and narrows India’s strategic space for manoeuvre. The crisis is by no means over.
