In the admirable bail order for Disha Ravi, Judge Dharmendra Rana says “offence of sedition cannot be invoked to minister to the wounded vanity of the governments.” We must question how she was denied her liberty for ten days on what he calls “sketchy” insinuations. A shame on our democracy.

MLAs bringing down Puducherry govt bad for democracy. But leadership vacuum in Congress is clear

Fall of Congress-led Puducherry government encapsulates BJP’s approach to power politics: No prize is too small. The role of Centre-nominated MLAs in bringing down an elected government may look Chanakyan but it undermines democracy. But Congress deserves no sympathy. Its failure to check defections despite warning signals underlines leadership vacuum.

  1. A comment on the Disha Ravi (DR) case:

The Print Team, please do not decry democracy without sufficient reason.

An extract from the judgement in Disha Ravi’s case as published in sections of media…

“…It is not mere engagement with persons of dubious credentials which is indictable rather it is the purpose of engagement which is relevant for the purpose of deciding culpability…”

When there is a suspicion, as in this case where DR contacted persons of dubious credentials ( as established by the state) and tried to conceal her identity, there is always a case for investigation as to the purpose. We can’t say that such matters should not be investigated. In this case democratic ways as laid down was followed.

Taking into custody, the courts, bail etc. is a process of investigation in a real democracy. So once again, please do not decry our democracy.

Disclaimer: I believe in the innocence of Disha Ravi. But more than that I believe in the process of investigation, which is absolutely necessary here, is a democratic process.

Tail piece: I want to believe Justice will prevail. When one attempts the extra ordinary, it is but natural to encounter the extra ordinary.

  2. Shri Varavara Rao’s case was even more deserving than Ms Disha Ravi’s. 2. When the learned Judge asked Delhi Police to establish a nexus between Ms Ravi and the events of 26th January, they said they were still investigating. Accustomed to having their conjectures taken at face value. So long as Ms Komal Sharma has a free run, the credibility of the force will remain under a cloud.

    • She hot what she deserved. This is a good warning to those who think that they can brew trouble in India from abroad and willing accomplices in India.

  3. After watching Cut the Clutter. No prize is too small, true. But there is always a price tag. Often of opportunity cost as well. The phrase Party with a difference – actually now even the differences have ceased – is consigned to history. There is no possibility of cooperative federalism, reaching out to the Opposition in the larger national interest. Not even on matters of national security and foreign policy. While the numbers may be assembled to pass a law, its implementation will inevitably founder on the ground in the large parts of the country that are still ruled by opposition parties. 2. One cannot judge whether there is a causative link between this new approach to politics and delivery of good governance and economic growth. Consider the most highly regarded CM in the country and the condition of UP. Some tremors coming in from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Despite the weak state of the opposition, political trouble is brewing. 3. Congress party ke baare mein ab kya bola jaa sakta hai.
