The Australian state of Victoria has pulled out of hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games, saying that the $7 billion event is “all expense and no benefit.” That’s also true of the Commonwealth itself. It’s time to shut down this anachronistic colonial-era entity, together with the Games held in its name.
India’s multidimensional poverty dip is commendable but progress is less on health, education
A nearly 10 percentage point reduction in India’s multidimensional poor population is commendable. But there’s much work yet to be done. The progress has been on ‘standard of living’ metrics, less on health and education. Releasing the long-delayed Consumption Expenditure Survey will also add much-needed depth to India’s poverty-alleviating policies.
