Free markets aren’t perfect, but less imperfect than any other. Brutally so. Evidence is IPL auctions. Steve Smith, ICC’s number one batsman, gets Rs 2.2 crore, whereas compatriot Glenn Maxwell gets 14+, unsung Chris Morris tops with 16.2, and uncapped Krishnappa Gowtham is worth Rs 9.2 crore. Merit over stardom.

Modi leveraging India’s Covid ‘miracle’ is good but nation can’t risk complacency on vaccination

As the world wakes up to India’s Covid ‘miracle’ of low cases and deaths, PM Modi is doing well to leverage it. From the subcontinent to Indian Ocean to the Caribbean, he’s reaching out with vaccines and ideas. This is good, but India can’t risk self-congratulatory complacency and crawling vaccinations.

Indian ‘Metro Man’ E Sreedharan may not change BJP fortune in Kerala, but he is a prize catch

India’s ‘Metro Man’ E Sreedharan’s keenness to enter public life at 88 is praiseworthy. It shows his indomitable spirit and commitment to serve. His entry may not change the BJP’s fortune in Kerala. But he is a prize catch, rich in symbolism for PM Modi’s political narrative around infrastructure development.

  1. The news from Maharashtra – which must have the best health infrastructure in the country – is not good. Nor from Kerala, the original success story. Inexplicable why the vaccination drive is moving like an arthritic snail. It is our only hope for a safe opening up of the economy, a return to normalcy. Whether it is tiny Israel or the United States, more comparable in terms of size and population, other countries are racing ahead. The variants are a reminder how the coronavirus is continuing to mutate, becoming more deadly. One hopes all important decisions are being made by medical professionals, not babus, else Shri Anil Swarup will be forced to tweet once again.

    • Ashok,

I was in New York, arguably the Mumbai of the USA in many ways, when the pandemic hit the metro real bad last year. It is the nature of life in the overcrowded metro. Even if everyone stays home, one can’t be 6 feet away from the nearest person!!!!

Kerala is different in that, the atmosphere there is not conducive to keeping a discipline!!! Again a reflection of another dimension in the US (Why we should we wear a mask?)

  2. The desire to serve burns bright in the seena even at four score and eight. After spending most of his life with politicians, although doing what was educated and trained for, gentleman surely knows the culture within each party, what is expected from each new entrant.
