The Supreme Court has struck a blow for transparency by bringing the Chief Justice of India’s office under the RTI Act. But this covers only the administrative side of the top court. Transparency should make its way into the judicial side as well and end the culture of sealed envelopes.
The higher judiciary – led with utmost distinction and valour by the apex court – is our most trusted institution, the zealous guardian of the rights, freedoms and liberties of all Indian citizens. Its silence for a hundred days over Kashmir is inexplicable. It needs more to be seen as an immobile object before the irresistible force of the state.
