The visit of EU MPs to Kashmir is a start, even if not perfect, to opening the troubled Valley to the world. It’s high time the Modi government also allowed Indian politicians to tour J&K. There can be little hope for normality in Kashmir if democracy and peace are stage-managed.

AAP’s free bus ride for women unlikely to deliver political gain, will add to DTC’s losses

Free bus rides for women launched in Delhi today by the AAP government is myopic and fiscally irresponsible. Besides, the political dividends of such freebies offered before elections are not proven either. Bus rides in Delhi are already among the cheapest. This sop will only further burden the loss-making DTC.

  1. Normalcy requires a genuine, meaningful, respectful dialogue with the people of Kashmir. Who represents them is not an easy question to answer, although the mainstream politicians were a good place to start. 2. Winning the world’s trust is the idea behind this visit, which deserves a qualified welcome. How difficult that could be can be inferred from this tweet from @UNGeneva : We are extremely concerned that the population of Indian administered Kashmir continues to be deprived of a wide range of human rights and we urge the Indian authorities to unlock the situation and fully restore the rights that are currently being denied.
