The visit of EU MPs to Kashmir is a start, even if not perfect, to opening the troubled Valley to the world. It’s high time the Modi government also allowed Indian politicians to tour J&K. There can be little hope for normality in Kashmir if democracy and peace are stage-managed.

Besides, the political dividends of such freebies offered before elections are not proven either. Bus rides in Delhi are already among the cheapest. Normalcy requires a genuine, meaningful, respectful dialogue with the people of Kashmir. Who represents them is not an easy question to answer, although the mainstream politicians were a good place to start. 2.
