Today, chronic disease accounts for 53% deaths in India. 1 in 11 people are diabetic. 1 in 4 deaths are due to cardiovascular diseases. Cancer cases will increase by 12% by 2025. Autoimmune diseases are catching up to be the number one cause of chronic ailments.
I am not here to scare you, but to give you a ray of hope!
It is known that poor nutrition, physical inactivity, stress and alcohol / tobacco consumption are major factors that have led to the rise of chronic diseases. Fortunately, health clubs have a stake in increasing awareness about physical activity. So, enough is known of its benefits. The accessibility to yoga and meditation centres has made stress relief possible. Government has made reasonable policy changes to reduce alcohol / tobacco consumption.
Nutrition, however, is still debatable. For example, you will find research studies in reputable science journals proving that coffee is both good and bad for our health. So, which nutritional advice can one rely on?
Here, I am making a case for adopting the lifestyle of people who have reversed their chronic diseases (diabetes, high BP, arthritis, cancer, eczema and so on) simply by changing their diet. Thankfully, there are hundreds if not thousands of people who have been cured. Find links to some of these stories in the end.
It would be good to understand how chronic disease develops and how we humans react to it. Chronic disease takes time to show up in the body and the blood report. When something goes wrong in the body, it gives signs such as constipation, headache, diarrhoea, acidity, bloating, pain etc. The body has an ability to heal itself. But, if we ignore the symptoms and rely on pills, the symptoms are suppressed. When the symptoms keep reappearing at a higher frequency, it means that the body is literally screaming for help. That’s when we visit a doctor.
What follows is a series of tests. Then, there are two possibilities. First, the tests are normal. The doctors cannot officially diagnose you with anything. And then we feel – I am healthy. Second, is that of a diagnosis – a “certificate” of a certain chronic disease, followed by a prescription and an ultimatum that these medicines are your lifelong companion. So, it starts with symptoms and develops into a disorder or disease. A human mind usually goes into denial and one day, finally, accepts the situation.
Let’s assume for a moment that doctors and pharmaceutical companies work in the noble pursuit of helping the patient. Even if that is correct, none of the chronic diseases have been reversed with medicines so far. And none of the doctors (except a miniscule) will tell you that it is indeed possible to reverse the disease. Not because they don’t want to help, but because they are not aware.
The idea of ‘healthy’ in today’s times is when we are free of any diagnosis and when our medical tests are “normal”. In reality, being healthy means living a symptom-free and a medicine-free life. But, because everyone has some health problem or the other and everyone takes medicines, it has become the new normal.
In India, apart from stress and physical inactivity, the major reason for ill health is that our perfect Indian food has got highly corrupted with usage of oil, dairy, meat and processed food – all devoid of fibre.
Excess oil cannot be excreted, it is stored in the tissues. None of the animals drink the milk of another animal. Humans do and it is completely unnatural. Noone likes to consume raw meat. Laced in oil and masala, the inedible meat is made edible. And “foods” that come in packets should not even be called ‘foods’.
So, is there a way to live life free of all the above? Hundreds of people across the world have cured themselves from life-long conditions following something called ‘whole food plant-based diet’ – a complete lifestyle change. I’ve given a summary of what it means below.
These people consume ‘zero’ packaged food. They replace cooking oils with healthy fats such as coconut, peanuts and seeds. Some of them have turned into chefs and developed dairy alternatives to almost every dairy product. They make Indian desserts with dates and natural fruits rather than processed sugars. They consume high amounts of fruits and raw vegetables. All in all, they consume Whole Foods and Plant Based Diet = No refined products and no animal products.
It is important to recognize that none of the companies benefit from propagating natural foods. So, as sensible humans, we need to take charge of our health.
