LONDON (Reuters) – Britain on Friday named Peter Wilson as its new ambassador to China, charging the Mandarin-speaking official with one of the most challenging roles in British diplomacy.

Wilson, whose father was a governor of Hong Kong, will succeed Caroline Wilson when he takes up his role in August.

His appointment, first reported by Reuters in February, comes as Britain’s Labour government steps up its diplomatic engagement with China after years of tensions under previous Conservative governments.
