New Delhi:Canadian PM Justin Trdueau will to Poland to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp. On his tour between 26 and 28 January, Canadian Holocaust survivors and Deborah Lyons, Canada’s Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combatting Antisemitism, will join him.
The Prime Minister will meet with Holocaust survivors, hear their stories, remember those senselessly killed, and vow to continuously oppose antisemitism, hatred, and bigotry. He will also hold bilateral meetings with the President and the Prime Minister of Poland, where he will discuss transatlantic security, support for Ukraine, and Canada’s potential contributions to Poland’s energy security, a Canadian government release stated.
The Prime Minister will also meet with international partners to discuss key geopolitical challenges, including Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East. He will stress the importance of maintaining global unity to defend peace, democracy, and human rights.
“What happened at the Auschwitz Birkenau German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp is a stark reminder of what happens when we give way to hate. Eighty years later, we remember the unimaginable horrors that the Holocaust inflicted on millions of Jewish people, we fight against hate and antisemitism, and we reaffirm our unequivocal pledge of ‘Never again’,” said Trudeau.
Last year, the Canadian government announced $90.5 million to combat antisemitism, preserve Holocaust remembrance, and educate against Holocaust denial and distortion.
