New Delhi: While Agra attracts more than 42 lakh tourists every year, the city has one of the least Airbnb stays in the world, according to a new research by the website Inkifi.

With only 243 active rentals out of a total seven million across the world, Agra ranks sixth in the list of least Airbnb stays, the study noted. Topping this list is the city of Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei, with 115 active rentals. Inkifi claims that with just £18 or Rs 1742.91, you can find the cheapest listing in Bandar Seri Begawan.

Gibraltar, with 158 active rentals, ranks second in the list.

Inkifi’s research also revealed facts about other cities across India. IT hub Bengaluru is the second cheapest city to live in an Airbnb, with an average daily rate of £19.26 or Rs 1,864.91. Pune, meanwhile, is the eighth cheapest city to live in an Airbnb, with a daily rate of £25.80 or Rs 2498.17.

Cities with most Airbnb stays

Since 2019, Airbnb has seen a 30.92 per cent decline in the number of active rentals, as the total number of listings for the top 10 destinations fell from 303,535 to 209,682 till 2022. The study said this decline can be attributed to various factors, including the impact of Covid-19 on the tourism industry.

Cities with the most Airbnb stays, such as London, Paris and New York City, saw major drops in active Airbnb listings. Listings in London saw a 42.51 per cent decline, from 59,378 in 2019 to 34,135 in 2022. Paris saw a decline of 27.49 per cent, with active listings going from 34,395 in 2019 to 24,940 in 2022.

While these numbers highlight the total number of active listings in the cities, they do not reflect the density of Airbnbs in the area. Topping the list of cities with the highest density of Airbnbs are Pattaya in Thailand, with 79.25 rentals per 1,000 people. Jeju in South Korea came second with 30.89 rentals per 1,000 people and Orlando in the US was ranked third, with 29.21 rentals per 1,000 people.

Looking at the cost of Airbnb stays, Ankara, Bengaluru and Kathmandu are among the cheapest cities to stay in a rental, while Las Vegas, Miami and San Francisco are among the most expensive.

Inkifi conducted its research study using data from AirDNA, a resource for vacation rental research, and the World Population Review.
