New Delhi: African heads of state, business leaders, and international development partners will gather in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on 27-28 January for the Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit, the World Bank said in a press statement.

The summit aims to secure commitments for expanding access to reliable and affordable electricity to 300 million people in Africa by 2030.

The summit, organized by the African Development Bank, the World Bank Group, and global partners, will address Africa’s significant electricity access gap, with nearly 600 million people lacking access to this essential resource. The gathering will focus on utilizing new technologies and innovative financing solutions to tackle this challenge.

High-level participation is expected, with several African heads of state and government joining over 1,000 participants, including a strong representation from the private sector.

Two key outcomes are anticipated from the summit: the Dar es Salaam Energy Declaration, outlining commitments and actions for energy sector reform from African governments, and the first set of National Energy Compacts. These compacts will serve as country-specific roadmaps, detailing targets and timelines for implementing critical reforms.

Twelve countries – Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, and Zambia – will present their initial energy compacts during the summit. Other African nations are anticipated to develop compacts in later phases.

The Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit represents a crucial step towards achieving universal energy access in Africa, aiming to transform lives, drive sustainable development, and create jobs.
