Islamabad, Jun 18 (PTI) Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday congratulated Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the peace agreement with the US to end the war in West Asia, saying it would help to rebuild the Islamic Republic and strengthen peace in the region.
Sharif received a telephone call from the Iranian leader and their conversation lasted over 30 minutes, the Prime Minister’s Office said.
The Prime Minister congratulated President Pezeshkian, the Iranian leadership and the people of Iran on the signing of the historic peace deal, it said.
US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Pezeshkian on Wednesday signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding aimed at restoring peace in West Asia. Sharif signed the agreement on Thursday as the key mediator of the negotiations.
“This landmark deal would not only help restore peace in the region, but also go a long way in rebuilding the Iranian nation and further strengthening Pakistan-Iran ties, across all areas of mutual interest,” he said.
While lauding Iran’s decision to sign the peace deal, Sharif wished the Iranian side success in the next phase of negotiations and assured President Pezeshkian of Pakistan’s continued support to Iran in all spheres, the PMO said.
Pezeshkian thanked Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir for their roles in steering the mediation process, saying Iran would always remember Pakistan’s positive and constructive efforts and its support for Iran during these difficult times.
He also said that Iran was keen to enhance and expand its bilateral ties with Pakistan across all areas of mutual interest.
Both leaders agreed to visit each other’s capitals at the earliest possible opportunity to carry forward the excellent cooperation between the two sides in bilateral as well as regional matters.
Sharif also conveyed his respectful regards to Ayatollah Sayyid Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran.
Meanwhile, Sharif’s visit to Switzerland was postponed after the signing of the document electronically by the two warring sides, according to the state media.
The prime minister was set to travel to Geneva on Thursday night, where Pakistan was poised to co-host the ceremony with Qatar.
PM Sharif has postponed his Switzerland visit as the Islamabad MoU is already signed and under implementation, said Adil Shahzeb, Head of state-run Pakistan TV, while speaking live from Burgenstock, Switzerland.
“The US-Iran technical talks will continue separately under the agreement’s framework,” he added. PTI SH ZH ZH
