New Delhi: The Japanese government Sunday granted special protected status to nearly 40 food and drink items from the UK. The protected status means that British businesses can export to Japan with the confidence that their products are safeguarded against imitation and could lead to a boost in British exports to Japan., a UK government release stated.

These 39 products, originating from England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, have already been protected and recognized as geographical indications (GIs) by the UK Government. Among the products to receive the status are Single Malt Welsh Whisky and Beacon Fell Traditional Lancashire Cheese.

After completing Japanese scrutiny processes, they have now formally gained protection.

Geographical indications safeguard food and drink products with a distinct local identity, supporting jobs and tourism in mainly rural areas. This move is in line with the government’s Plan for Change, which aims to boost local growth.

This group of GIs follows 37 others who earlier this year gained protection in Japan, including Cornish Pasties and Anglesey Sea Salt. The UK offers a smorgasbord of flavors from across the British Isles.

Minister for Food Security Daniel Zeichner expressed his delight at the news, emphasizing the commitment to growing trade opportunities for British producers worldwide. He believes this agreement will allow consumers to trust the quality and reputation of British food.
