MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – One of the most infamous drug lords in Mexico’s history, Osiel Cardenas, was released from prison on Friday, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons said.

Cardenas, who was the leader of the Gulf Cartel, was captured after a gun battle in 2003 and extradited to the United States in 2007.

A spokesperson for the U.S. prison service told Reuters Cardenas was released “into the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)” earlier on Friday.
