Nairobi, Aug 21 (PTI) India on Friday said it has raised with Somalian authorities the issue of the hijacking of two commercial vessels with 22 Indian sailors onboard.

In a post on X, the Indian High Commission in Kenya said it is understood that there are reportedly 16 Indian seafarers onboard MT Sibu and six Indian seafarers onboard MV Lutuf.

“All Indian seafarers are reportedly safe. We attach the highest importance to the safety and welfare of the Indian seafaring community,” it said.

“We have taken up the matter of Indian seafarers onboard vessels MT Sibu (Eritrea flagged) and MV Lutuf (Cameroon flagged) with the concerned authorities in Somalia,” the Indian mission said.

The Eritrea-flagged oil products tanker MT Sibu 1, carrying 20 crew members, including 16 Indians, was hijacked in the Gulf of Aden on August 20, about 30 nautical miles off the Yemeni coast.

The second vessel, the Cameroon-flagged M/V LUTUF, was hijacked on August 17 off Somalia’s Puntland coast, according to the official. The vessel has 10 crew members, including six Indians. PTI GRS ZH GRS GRS

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
