New Delhi: After being ousted from the Prime Minister’s office two days ago, Imran Khan now faces a central probe for allegedly selling jewellery received as a gift from another nation.
Reports said the gift was not sent to the state repository or the tosha khana as is custom.
The piece of jewellery — a necklace — was was instead given to special assistant Zulfi Bokhari, who then sold it to a jeweller based in Lahore.
As per Pakistani law, any gift received from diginatries of a foreign state must be put in the depository. It is illegal if leaders fail to deposit the gift, or half the amount of the gift’s worth.
Reports said the necklace was sold for Rs 18 crore.
The Imran Khan government reportedly deposited a few lakhs of rupees in the tosh khana for the necklace which was inadequate. This alarmed the Federal Investigation Agency, prompting a probe.
Imran Khan became the first Prime Minister in Pakistan’s 75 year history to have been ousted by a no-confidence motion on 10 April 2022.
